Not a numbers person? A professional bookkeeper can help

Find me on:

Do you struggle to add up the fingers on your hands?

Does the thought of doing your taxes have you breaking out in hives?

Do numbers seem more like Egyptian hieroglyphs than anything translatable?

You’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs struggle to get their heads around the finances at a company. And according to the science, it might not even be your fault. You just don’t have the genes for it.

The number sense

Researchers discovered that there’s something called “number sense”, which is present in some preschoolers even before they learn the most basic of math.

This “number sense” is an innate skill, used by our cavemen and cavewomen ancestors to figure out the size of a herd of buffalo and figure out how many berries they need to bring back to feed the whole tribe.

It can help identify from a young age those who will have a natural aptitude for mathematics.

Don’t ignore the numbers

Research also shows that most entrepreneurs – being generally quite clever people who are good at problem-solving – have a brain for math concepts. But that doesn’t mean you enjoy maths or want to spend time digging deep into the numbers.

Unfortunately, there’s also a correlation between ignoring the finances and failing in business. Xero recently conducted a survey of accountants about the mistakes their small business and entrepreneurial clients make. By far the number one mistake was not having ongoing insight into their own finances. Too many entrepreneurs were talking to their accountant only at tax time. The rest of the year, they were willfully ignorant of what was going down on the cash side. Many of these businesses ended up failing.

Ignore the numbers at your peril.

A professional bookkeeper is your maths nerd on speed dial

If you’re an entrepreneur who struggles with math, don’t despair. Not only do you join the ranks of Thomas Edison, Michael Faraday, and other fabulously clever people who were bad at maths, but you actually don’t need to be good at math to do what you do.

The difference between successful entrepreneurs and those who fail isn’t that one group knows the ins-and-outs of the finances, and the other doesn’t. It’s that one group ensures that even if they aren’t dealing with the numbers, they have someone on the team who can translate their finances into entrepreneur-speak.

That someone is us – your professional bookkeeper slash Xero wrangler. We’ve got the number sense to handle all your accounts and give you a monthly report broken down into the data you actually WANT to know.
